Introduction


Weaning is a term used when we introduce a variety of solid foods into a baby’s diet. It is a special time in a baby’s life and should be an enjoyable experience for baby and parent/carer.

We wean to ensure that adequate energy and protein are provided in your baby’s diet and we know that breast milk or formula milk is enough for your baby until they are around six months old. Babies digestive systems are not developed enough to cope with solid food until they are six months old.

Benefits


Weaning is also a fundamental part of your baby’s/child’s development. It helps:

  • the jaw develop muscles for speech development
  • develop new social skills and future independence
  • provide your baby with enough important nutrients like iron and Vitamin D
  • set a good foundation for healthy eating through your baby/child’s life
  • gain independence
