South Tyneside Family Hubs deliver several groups to develop parent and child relationships, where feelings are at the heart of emotional wellbeing.
One of these groups is called ‘GroBrain’, an infant brain development programme which explores the vital role parents and carers play in ‘wiring up’ the connections in their baby’s brain.
Sessions focus on the importance of the first 1001 days from conception to two years in developing emotionally healthy infants, where parents and carers learn more about the importance of bonding in a child’s early life.
We sat down with Katerina Fixter to talk about her experience of GroBrain, how it helped her in preparation for the birth of her baby and why she’s encouraging other mothers to book a place on the programme.
“At the beginning, when I was pregnant, I knew nothing about being a mother,” explained Katerina.
“I was searching for different educations and what I can learn before becoming a mum. I then found GroBrain and thought I’m going up sign up because it sounded really interesting, and I wasn’t wrong.
“I felt more confident after the course, and I felt like I had all the support I needed. It was fantastic.”
Reflecting on how GroBrain helped prepare her for life after birth, Katerina said: “After my baby was born, I was already prepared on what to expect.
“I learned about building relationships with your child even before they’re born. When she was born, we had really, really great contact. The emotional and well-being connection was built from the beginning, which was great.”
Katerina is now urging mothers and mothers-to-be to book their place on GroBrain. “I would recommend this because before you become a mum, it’s so important to have this support, which you definitely have here.
“You can ask any questions; it’s like an open space for you to come and share your experiences as well. You also can meet mums-to-be, which I did, which was fantastic.”
If given the opportunity to do GroBrain again, Katerina admits she would jump at the chance. “I really enjoyed the interaction with staff.
“They answered all my questions and explained everything about brain development. I felt more ready when I became a mum, and we know how to respond in different situations. I definitely can read my baby much more now.”
