South Tyneside families will have the opportunity to participate in an evening of festive entertainment as the Winter Parade returns to South Shields on Friday 5 December.

Prior to the event, silversmith and visual artist Kate Hunter-Parker will be delivering a variety of parade workshops at our Family Hubs.

Suitable for all ages, young people will be learning how to create small owl puppets, owl lanterns and parade costumes using recycled materials.

Not only will the children in attendance have the opportunity to learn something new, but they will also walk in the Winter Parade with artwork they have made (should they wish to).

Speaking about the parade and looking ahead to the workshops, Kate said: “For my part of the night parade, I will be making a large owl using mostly recycled materials, that will walk in the parade alongside large parade artworks made by other artists. We are working to a woodland and sustainability theme this year.

“I am a silversmith and visual artist with over 25 years practice in the North East. I have always been passionate about recycling and reusing materials, so I am looking forward to sharing my experience in the Family Hub workshops.”

Project Officer, Claire, from The Cultural Spring whose organisation will also be supporting the event said: “We work with local professional artists in the summer and winter parade as this is important as they pass on skills to our young people.

“Not only does it build skills but promotes confidence when they see their work displayed.  When marching in the parade young people have pride in the group that they are promoting but also with the work that they have made.”

Join us from Monday 20 October to Monday 3 November. You can book your place by calling the hosting Family Hub. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
