Little inventors from across South Tyneside have been testing their imaginations and designing unforgettable inventions that can help improve the health of our oceans.
From the wacky wobbegong to the magnificent manta ray, the ocean is full of surprises great and small. Inventors have been inspired by life under the waves for as long as we can remember, from cars designed like fish, armour made like shells or homes in the shape of corals.
31 young people took part in workshops at Riverside Family Hub on Saturday 29 March with educational organisation Little Inventors as part of South Tyneside Council and Dogger Bank Wind Farm’s Making Waves: Inventing for a Better Ocean challenge.
The programme is challenging young people aged 4-14 from across South Tyneside to create inventions inspired by our oceans with the chance of having them brought to life by designers, makers and engineers.
Gill Tate, Family Hub Community Development Worker said: “The young peoples’ inventions were fabulous, they knew all about the oceans and what they wanted to create, to keep what was in the ocean safe – it was lovely to see.”
Ideas included robotic whales that collects rubbish, sensors that prevent dolphins swimming into fishing nets, deep sea cameras and a watch inspired by the arms of an octopus.

If you have an idea which could be brought to life alongside inspirational inventors, submit your idea by 30 April to be in with the chance of seeing your idea move from paper to reality.
